A Raging Martial Arts Scene Finds a Home in Silicon Valley — The Information

Few people have ever smothered Mark Zuckerberg. Khai Wu is one of them.

A professional fighter known as The Shadow, Wu has a black belt in jiujitsu and has used it on the Facebook founder in private mixed martial arts training sessions for the past few months. Their practice bouts include the occasional Brazilian jiujitsu choke on the mat. “He’s never like, ‘Don’t do that,'” Wu said. “He actually asked, ‘Can you give me a little more resistance, a little more strength? I want to feel it. ‘”

Wu’s gym, the Guerrilla Jiu-Jitsu Academy in San Jose, Calif., has seen many techs like Zuckerberg come to learn how to fight. “We call them jiujitsu nerds,” he said — people who don’t look much like a threat until they’re on the mat. Zuckerberg, a lightweight 5-foot-7, may not inspire fear in the octagon, but his strength is in his mind. “You would never expect these guys to be able to take you down. The next thing you know, they’re attacking you with these extremely technical moves,” Wu said. “You don’t know that nerd is a silent killer.”
