The nation’s most prestigious college football programs derive immediate recognition and reverence from their uniforms.
While team apparel will be adjusted over the years, the oldest teams in the game are synonymous with a certain look that defines the brand. Even a casual viewer won’t need to ask which team is which when seeing Notre Dame’s gold helmets or LSU’s purple and gold jerseys.
These teams cracked the top 10 when 247Sports’ Brad Crawford ranked the most iconic uniforms in college football. However, big rivals Michigan and Ohio State battled it out for the top spot.
The Wolverines’ classic corn and navy blue uniforms snagged the No. 1 designation.
“Mix classic uniforms with the Jumpman flavor and the results are legendary,” Crawford wrote. “The Wolverines’ recent move to the Nike subsidiary was a successful deal that paired one of college football’s most iconic uniform designs with the leading supplier of streetwear in athletics. The results were stunning to say the least, adding shine to an already majestic appearance.”
After Michigan and Ohio State, Penn State, Texas and Notre Dame round out the top five.
There is an important distinction between the most iconic and the best. Crawford shouted out Oregon at No. 20 for the program’s flashy and innovative designs, but they don’t have a uniform that’s been through decades of ups and downs.
