FOX43 spoke to Google Search Trends Specialist Molly VandenBerg about trends both nationally and across the Commonwealth.

PENNSYLVANIA, USA — We’re almost halfway through summer, so now’s a good time to check out what Pennsylvanians are looking for before school starts.

FOX43 spoke to Google Search Trends Specialist Molly VandenBerg about trends both nationally and across the Commonwealth.

VandenBerg said she and her team saw a number of different topics in entertainment, technology and food nationally, but one thing stood out: “Stranger Things.”

The Netflix original released its highly anticipated two-part fourth season this summer—once on May 27 and again on July 1. The series was one of many productions that were to closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

It wasn’t just the show people were looking for: it was also the music.

“The show’s music has really become popular, especially with Kate Bush and her song ‘Running Up That Hill,'” she said. The show features the song multiple times, because (warning, spoilers to come) it is used to ward off the big bad of this season: Vecna.

“Search interest in her hit an all-time high in July, which I think is really unique in showing how much 1980s culture really resonates with a whole new generation,” she said. .

VandenBerg noted that people were also looking for the James Webb Telescope, which after being launched into orbit seven months ago captured what scientists believe was a galaxy from 13.5 billion years ago.

On a lighter note, many people were also looking for details about Nathan’s famous annual 4th of July hot dog eating contest, which Joey Chestnut won for the 15th time this year.

In Pennsylvania, people were especially interested in National Ice Cream Day.

“We looked at each state for the most searched ice cream chain on Google Maps,” VandenBerg said. “In Pennsylvania, it was Rita’s.”

More generally, people across the country were looking for all things summer, especially ways to cool down during those massive heat waves we’re seeing across the country.

“We’re seeing a lot of interest in searches for things like sunscreen face moisturizer and sunscreen foundation,” she said. “No matter who you are, it’s important to protect yourself from the sun.”

VandenBerg also said she’s ready to call this summer the summer of the bob. Apparently, many people across the country are considering buying the 2000s classic.

“I personally haven’t worn bucket hats since 2001, but I seem to be a late adopter; they’re definitely coming back,” she said.

And when it comes to this last week of the month, the Choco Taco captivated Google searchers. Klondike announced this week that the company has discontinued the summer favorite, which has been around for nearly 40 years.

“People gathered around the favorite dessert, hoping they would decide to keep it,” VandenBerg said.

As August approaches, VandenBerg says she expects many of Google’s trends to focus on back-to-school. She says many people are trying to be more careful with their money as the country continues to battle inflation.

“Plus, technology continues to be a priority as kids go back to their homework and try to figure out what the best online resources are and how parents can help.”
