Released in 2015, the original “Inside Out” imagined a world where people have five personified emotions – joy, sadness, fear, anger and disgust – guiding their daily thoughts and actions. The film focused on the emotions of Riley, a middle schooler who struggles to adjust to her family’s move from Minnesota to San Francisco, as her main emotion Joy is kicked out of the control center and forced to team up. with its polar opposite Sadness in a quest through his mind. The film ended with the two hitting it off as Joy recognizes Riley’s need to live an emotionally complex life, and she begins to collaborate more with her other emotions to guide the girl through adolescence.

Docter (“Up” and “Soul”) directed the original film, which also starred Phyllis Smith (Sadness), Lewis Black (Anger), Bill Hader (Fear), Mindy Kaling (Disgust), Kaitlyn Dias (Riley) , Diane Lane (Riley’s mother) and Kyle MacLachlan (Riley’s father).

A critical success, “Inside Out” won Best Animated Feature at the 2016 Oscars and received an Original Screenplay nomination. The film was also financially successful, grossing over $800 million at the worldwide box office.

“Inside Out 2” will follow Pixar’s previously announced “Elemental,” which hits theaters on June 16, 2023.
