A big part of Ausberry’s initial interest in Notre Dame and Ohio State was the coaches who served as his primary recruiters from the start.

At Notre-Dame, it was Marcus Freeman, the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at the time. At Ohio State, he was then the linebackers coach Al Washington. But in early 2022, after Ausberry’s junior football season, there was a major shift in the roles of these coaches.

As Freeman became head coach of Notre Dame, he hired Coach Washington as assistant coach of the Irish defense. Meanwhile, Freeman made two additional hires that caught Ausberry’s attention.

Together, Freeman and these three coaches made up what might be considered a dream team in the eyes of an aspiring NFL linebacker. And Ausberry met the four when he visited South Bend in March.

“Seeing them all in one place was really crazy for me because, you know, at Ohio State, Coach Washington was recruiting me really hard,” Ausberry said in March. “And when Coach Freeman was still Notre Dame’s defensive coordinator, he was recruiting me just as hard. Now they’re here together.

“Now that (defensive coordinator) Al Golden is there, he is a very good coach. Came from the Bengals and they went to the Super Bowl. It shows you how good he is. And then you have James Laurinaitis, probably the best linebacker in Ohio State history. He played in the league. So, you know, there are so many tools to help me on and off the pitch.

“I was at a meeting. I was just listening to what (Golden) was saying, how he was teaching the players. He knows what he’s talking about. I can say he’s been on the highest levels of the biggest stages because that the way he teaches the game is so good and he knows what he’s talking about.

“Even getting to know him as a person, he’s a really good, energetic guy. I like the way he approaches things and stuff like that.

Following that trip, Ausberry said one of the highlights was watching a spring workout. He mentioned being impressed with the way Coach Freeman handled the top job.

He also talked about spending time with the then-prospect. Braylon James who was born in Louisiana and grew up an LSU fan. And he named several Irish freshmen he was in contact with.

“I spent time with Jaylen Sneed, jade mickeyand running back Jadarian Price… And Tyson Ford, too,” Ausberry explained in March. “I had dinner with them.

“It was really nice. They are classy guys. They are very good, intelligent football players. You know they match the Notre Dame standard. It really makes me think if I’m going to be in this position one day too. So it was really cool to hang out with them.

He integrated with the coaches. Ausberry was a particularly good fit with current freshmen. And when he returned to Notre Dame in June, his interest would increase.

By then, Ausberry had made unofficial visits to Auburn, where her brother is a freshman, and to Miami.
