Marvel Studios and Lucasfilm at D23 Expo: All the Trailers, Sneak Peeks, and Footage You Didn’t See

You know what makes a show like Expo D23 worth all the lines, plane tickets and hotel costs? The priceless treasure of being among the first 7,000 people to see images from all your favorite franchises. This year’s Marvel Studios and Lucasfilm showcase gave fans exactly what they wanted: plenty of exclusive sneak peeks they can go back and brag about to everyone they know. Invaluable! That’s what the crowds were there for as they entered the huge D23 venue on Saturday morning, and even the prospect of waiting for hours outside on an unusually humid Anaheim morning might put people off.

For Star Wars and Marvel fans around the world, however, there were some trailers you could see even if you weren’t heading to Disneyland for Expo D23. You can find some of them – trailers for Andor, Tales of the Jedi, The Mandalorian Season 3, Willow, Werewolf By Night, and Secret Invasion – on YouTube right now. You don’t need to read my descriptions of them. Go see for yourself! There were, however, plenty of trailers and previews that weren’t released globally. Here’s a breakdown of what you missed if you weren’t in the room where the Lucasfilm and Marvel Studios showcase happened.

Indiana Jones 5 (June 30, 2023): The trailer begins on a deserted street with plenty of motorcycle and car chase scenes as the narration travels through a lifetime of lived adventure (Indiana’s, obviously). Images of underwater mummies and various exotic locations, and action scenes like a motorcycle chasing a plane down a runway, are intercut with scenes of Indiana teaching and visiting what looks like university archives (i imagine Indy saying “This belongs to my university!”). Indy says his adventurous days are over, but aren’t they? “I’ve come to believe that it’s not so much what you believe,” Indiana Jones says, “but it’s how much you believe it.” We see that yes, this is the early 1960s (maybe late 1950s, you know how the decades blend together). We see Jones’ hand grab his hat and a new adventure begins, with Old Man Indy embroiled in various chases and throwing plenty of punches. He even rides a horse through a subway tunnel to a train! The stinger at the end is Indy, ahead of his adventure partner played by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, doing a few rounds of whipping before dozens of criminals draw their guns and open fire on him. He’s getting out of the way!

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (November 11, 2022): The first part is what looks like a full movie sequence, in which Queen Ramonda of Wakanda is called to the UN to answer many questions about vibranium and its dangers. She points out that they don’t sell or trade vibranium with anyone, not because vibranium is dangerous, but because other countries are dangerous. This tense exchange (Angela Bassett owns it) is intercut with a group of mercenaries or soldiers breaking into a Wakandan outreach center in Mali and demanding to be taken away vibranium-armed. When they unlock the safe, out comes the Dora Milaje, led by Okoye. Surprise, all the scientists in the center are also Dora Milaje, and they absolutely destroy all the mercenaries. Back at the UN, the Dora Milaje enters with all the mercenaries in chains. The trailer itself then begins, which is more or less what’s already been revealed, but it includes more shots of Namor and Attuma.

Stone heart (2023): Audiences got a glimpse of the Disney+ Ironheart series after Wakanda Forever, which is fitting since the movie features lead character Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne). The sizzle reel begins in a college dorm, MIT, with Riri speaking into a microphone hidden in her collar. It’s very high-tech, but his advisor (or professor or dean) played by Jim Rash (reviving his role as Civil war) saying she’s not the only genius at MIT When Riri is told that what she builds is important, she replies, “No, it’s iconic.” She builds her own armor, “like hers, only better”. The flip side of the trailer focuses on Anthony Ramos’ Parker Robbins, a street-level villain who comes to possess a mystical, demonic cowl. He gathers an army of criminals, recruiting them with the money left in the library books. The Hood is charismatic, as much as Riri Williams. The atmosphere is very cool. As Kevin Feige pointed out during the panel, Stone heart is going to be the biggest magic vs. technology battle we’ve seen in the MCU so far.

Jonathan Majors as The One Who Remains, aka Kang

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (February 17, 2023): We catch up with Scott Lang and Hope Van Dyne driving through the countryside with the now-teen Lang – or is she a young adult now? – daughter Cassie (now played by Kathryn Newton). They listen to his book on tape, and a montage shows Lang living big with a book and lots of public recognition. He was even named Employee of the Century at Baskin Robbins! Sure, some people still call him Spider-Man, but whatever. Then Lang finds out that Cassie has been hanging out with Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne (Michael Douglas and Michelle Pfeiffer) and doing a lot of science stuff. Cassie even created a two-way radio that tunes into the Quantum Realm, which scares Janet. But before Cassie can stop him, all of the Pyms, Van Dynes, and Langs are sucked into the Quantum Realm. They encounter many wild creatures, including Bill Murray (he seems to have been friends with Jan during his time there). And of course there’s Kang, played by Jonathan Majors. It turns out he has something he wants to steal and he wants Lang to do it for him. Lang refuses and Kang doesn’t take it well. Oh – and Young Avengers fans will love knowing that Cassie has a great costume in the pictures.

Alaqua Cox as Maya Lopez/Echo in Hawkeye
Picture: Disney+

Echo (2023): The preview of Echo was visually arresting, starting with Echo being… I mean reborn in a surreal pool of dirt filled with glowing liquid. No idea what it is! Other sequences, in black and white and taking place in the past, punctuated the preview. Maya Lopez gets a new prosthetic leg, this one made by her dad with a symbol that means “warrior” on it. There’s a deadly fight scene in which Maya cranks up the music on an audio system in order to pound a group of guys’ eardrums with guns, making them even easier to take down. There’s a brief flash of someone looking like Daredevil, but is he? However, we definitely see Kingpin at the very end of the trailer, waiting for Maya outside a residence. He is alive and well and has a bandage over one eye. Oh, and the entire preview has subtitles, appropriate for a show featuring a deaf superhero.

She-Hulk and Daredevil on the roof
Picture: Disney+

She-Hulk: Lawyer Daredevil scene: Although there is no trailer for the Daredevil: Born Again Disney+ series (filming has yet to begin), Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio have provided an in-depth look at an upcoming episode. of She-Hulk with Cox and Tatiana Maslany. In the clip, Daredevil and She-Hulk are on a rooftop, monitoring henchmen and determining their best course of action. Daredevil has a plan that doesn’t involve She-Hulk, which annoys Jen since She-Hulk is invincible. She is also unimpressed with his “powers” and doesn’t believe he can hear an exact number of heartbeats. Then Matt Murdock says he can hear his heartbeat and there’s a pause, and there’s a lot of chemistry and tension! And then Jen snaps out of it and is annoyed again. Sounds like Daredevil could train Jen to become a superhero? She even wears her She-Hulk costume! It’s a great scene and seeing Charlie Cox play Daredevil again is wonderful, especially someone who is confident and also quite funny!

Loki: Season 2 (2023): The next season’s scenes of Loki begin with the God of Mischief stumbling through the TVA, his body splitting apart and reassembling via glitches in time. It comes and goes like the TVA desk lamps. You see it everywhere, in the desert, in the cities, and you see new corners of the VAT — like a collection room run by Ke Huy Quan. Loki tries to convince these TVA agents, Mobius and B15, that Kang is the real threat – but they don’t remember him or Loki at all. There are tons of different setups for action scenes, including one where Loki and Mobius are in tuxedos that look like something out of a 1970s spy movie. I mean, Loki is wearing a retro ruffled tuxedo shirt. Season 2 looks just as weird as Season 1!

Ms. Marvel looks at the phone

Wonders (July 28, 2023): Kamala Khan’s big screen debut comes in The Marvels and at the very start of the trailer. At the top, Monica Rambeau is in space, investigating an anomaly for Nick Fury. Then when she uses her powers, she is suddenly switched with Kamala. Kamala, now in Monica’s spacesuit, greets Nick Fury. Hey, it’s Nick Fury! We see Monica (in white uniform!) and Fury knocking on the Khans’ door and asking to see Kamala. She panics with excitement. When Kamala tries to show off her powers, she switches places with Carol Danvers. If she swapped places with Carol, where is Kamala now? Fight alien commandos at an outdoor beat, then freak out when Goose eats them all with his mouth tentacles. The rest of the trailer is crazy action as the three team up, riff on each other, and definitively declare that they’re not a team (well, Kamala thinks they’re a team).
