Netflix has just released a new trailer for its animated series based on Cyberpunk 2077, and it’s more breathtaking than CD Projekt Red’s action role-playing video game.
First announced in 2020, Cyberpunk: Edge Runners is a 10-part standalone animated series from CD Projekt Red, Netflix and Studio Trigger, the animation studio behind shows like gurren lagann and kill her kill her. Unlike his Trailerwhich gave us vague but mondo cool shots of its neon cityscape, extreme character close-ups, and blazingly fast sakuga action sequences, this trailer gave us a glimpse of the anime’s story .
Cyberpunk: Edge Runners follows a street kid named David. After a near-death experience following a hit-and-run, David joins a team of eccentric edgerunners who seek to dispose of Night City’s bodies. The edgerunners team maintains the same quality of well-crafted character designs that Trigger is known for with a twist of Cyberpunk 2077 character archetypes: you have Maine, the massive muscle of the group and that of the anime Jackie Welles equivalent, punch girl Dorio, tech-wiz Kiwi, the eccentric Pilar, the captivating femme fatale Lucy and Rebecca, the shortstack with the short-fuse, to complete the crew.

Over the years, Studio Trigger has earned a reputation for creating some of the most explosive action sequences in anime. While some in the anime community view the studio’s output as style rather than substance, Trigger recently enhanced its catalog with a provocative world-building by giving star wars an essential creative facelift with a few episodes of its Disney+ anthology series, Star Wars: Visionsand through his latest Netflix show, brand new animal. With Promare director Hiroyuki Imaishi at the helm of this limited series anime, Cyberpunk: Edge Runners is shaping up to be another accolade to add to the anime studio’s resume.
Cyberpunk: Edge Runners is slated for release on August 31.
