Texas football trending for 4-Star Jordan Matthews ahead of decision date

The next decision date that has been set among the key targets for the Texas football recruiting class of 2023 came through a social media announcement on Aug. 4. Late in the morning of August 4, the highly touted four-star Woodlawn (LA) cornerback Jordan Matthew took to Twitter to announce his top three finalist schools and his August 15 decision date.

Texas succeeded with its three finalist schools, which also include the Tennessee Volunteers of the SEC East and the Michigan Wolverines of the Big Ten East.

Matthews announced his decision date and the top three finalist schools about a week after his unofficial visit to Austin for the Texas July barbecue and pool party.

He also unofficially visited Texas in April and January 2022. In total, Matthews unofficially visited Texas three times in 2022.

With that decision date set for Matthews, it looks like the Longhorns will have the final say in in-person visits among the front-runner schools in the race to land his summer commitment.

It also helps the Texas cause that literally every 2022 forecast from the trio of recruiting services that includes 247Sports, Rivals and On3, projects Matthews’ commitment to Texas. And a good chunk of those predictions projecting Matthews’ commitment to Texas have come in the past few weeks.

However, we can’t count on competition for Texas on the Tennessee and Michigan recruiting track in the race to land a Matthews commitment. He seemed to have real traction with Michigan and Tennessee during his official summer visits.

Matthews officially visited Michigan on June 3 and Tennessee on June 24.

But it’s hard to see Michigan or Tennessee making up enough ground in the next two weeks to push Texas to Matthews’ Aug. 25 commitment. Matthews’ commitment throughout the summer.

Joseph and the Longhorns have done a great job building a strong bond with Matthews and his side throughout the offseason. And it came to a head during the successful unofficial visit where Texas hosted Matthews for the July BBQ last week.

Texas currently holds 20 rookie commitments in the Class of 2023, highlighted by elite five-star quarterback Isidore Newman Arch Manning. Currently, Texas has commitments of three defensive backs in the Class of 2023, including five-star South Oak cornerback Cliff Malik Muhammad, five-star Westgate (LA) safety Derek Williams and four-star safety of Arlington-Seguin Jamel Johnson.
