Newly eligible for extension Lakers All-Star Forward james lebron and his agent rich paul met the team president Rob Pelinka today at the El Segundo team training center to discuss their future, reports ESPN’s Dave McMenamin. In his remarks to McMenamin, Paul called the conversation “productive.”
The Lakers could now sign James to a two-year, $97.1 million extension, which would keep the 19-year-old veteran under contract with Los Angeles until the 2024/25 season. McMenamin adds that James could decide to sign a one-year extension with a second-year player option. This way, LeBron can sign up for any club that recruits his son. Bronny James when young James becomes draft eligible in the 2024 offseason.
Here are some other notes from the Western Conference:
- The Lakers seem hesitant to trade players with several years left on their contracts, for Dan Woike of the Los Angeles Times. Woike thinks the front office would be more willing to acquire players on longer contracts if James decides to sign an extension keeping him in Los Angeles beyond 2023.
- Jazz coach’s assistant Alex Jensen is set to become the head coach of Team USA for the 2022 AmeriCup next month, USA Basketball announced in a Press release. Steve Wojciechowskihead coach of Marquette, and mike williamshead coach of the Wizards’ NBAGL affiliate (Capital City Go-Go), will work as assistants under Jensen. “I am honored to have the opportunity to coach the 2022 USA AmeriCup team and look forward to working with Mike and Steve and a talented group of players,” Jensen said of his new NBA offseason gig. “I continue to enjoy my time with USA Basketball and am thrilled to be selected for my first head coaching assignment.” Sarah Todd of the Deseret News notes that Jensen was first hired as an assistant to former Utah head coach Quin Snyder in 2013, but will remain under new head coach Will Hardy this season.
